Se il mondo fosse perfetto non ci sarebbe bisogno del volontariato perché lo Stato tutelerebbe i propri cittadini e garantirebbe loro servizi appropriati alle loro esigenze.
Ma nel nostro mondo imperfetto il volontariato è per molti versi la chiave di volta che sorregge interi sistemi di servizi.
Dalla tutela dei diritti, alla salvaguardia dell'ambiente, al supporto socio-sanitario, alla sicurezza, molti dei servizi che dovrebbero essere prerogativa di uno Stato efficiente vengono demandati ad associazioni di volontari che decidono di dedicare una fetta del proprio tempo e delle proprie risorse economiche al prossimo.
Per certi aspetti, pensare che lo spirito altruistico nel nostro paese sia ancora abbastanza sviluppato da fare in modo che continuino ad esistere associazioni di volontariato, è rassicurante ma ci si deve domandare quanto ancora potrà durare.
Il modello sociale che sta prendendo piede è di segno totalmente opposto ed è schematizzato in modo molto efficace in una canzone (ah, che bella la nostra tradizione delle canzoni di denuncia) che sostiene la teoria per la quale "l'uomo forte si nutre del debole che poi sul debole a sua volta si vendica".
L'animale sociale "uomo" spinto all'esasperazione, come ogni altra beast, forget the solidarity between similar and adapts to the law of the jungle where only the strongest survive, and everyone thinks for himself.
Volunteering is not an innate gift that some have and others do not but is the result of a mixture of individual sensitivity and social condition.
